Chronic Health & Sensitive Nervous Systems
Looking Beyond Symptoms
Some health concerns fit neatly into a diagnosis or a single body system. Others do not. Many of the people who come to see me have symptoms that cross multiple areas of health or have changed and evolved over time. They may experience fatigue alongside digestive symptoms, hormonal changes alongside sleep difficulties, sensory overwhelm alongside physical symptoms, or a general sense that their body is no longer responding the way it once did. Often they have already seen multiple practitioners, undergone testing or tried a variety of treatments, yet still feel that nobody has helped them make sense of the bigger picture.
One of the things I love most about Chinese medicine is its ability to look for patterns rather than viewing symptoms in isolation. Rather than asking, "Which symptom should we focus on?" I am often asking: "What might connect these experiences?" Sometimes asking a different question leads to a different understanding.
A Different Lens on Health
Chinese medicine has always recognised the close relationship between different systems within the body. Over time, my own clinical interests and additional training have expanded that lens even further. Alongside Japanese acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, I bring an understanding of nervous system function, brain health, early childhood development and the way our experiences shape how we move through the world. This broader perspective allows me to consider not only what is happening now, but also why your system may be responding the way it is.
Sleep, digestion, hormones, movement, sensory processing, emotional wellbeing, learning and resilience are not separate systems operating independently of one another. They constantly interact and influence each other. For some people, understanding these relationships helps make sense of symptoms that may otherwise seem unrelated or difficult to explain.
Gentle Japanese Acupuncture
Many people living with chronic health concerns or sensitive nervous systems discover that stronger treatment is not always better. My training in Japanese acupuncture emphasises listening carefully to the body's response and working with subtle, gentle techniques rather than force or intensity. Treatment is designed to meet your system where it is, providing the right input, at the right time and in the right amount. This approach is often particularly well suited to people who consider themselves sensitive, easily overwhelmed or who have reacted strongly to treatments, supplements or medications in the past.
Chinese Herbal Medicine in Stages
My approach to Chinese herbal medicine is influenced by a staged treatment model developed through advanced post-graduate training. Rather than trying to address every symptom at once, treatment is guided by an understanding that the body often needs support in a particular sequence. For some people, this may mean first improving digestion and absorption before moving on to deeper layers of treatment. For others, the initial focus may be restoring sleep, improving resilience, supporting the nervous system or reducing the body's overall burden before progressing to the next stage. As the body changes, the treatment strategy changes with it. This staged approach is particularly valuable for people with complex or longstanding health concerns, as it allows treatment to evolve in a way that is both sustainable and appropriate for the individual. Rather than forcing change, the goal is to create the conditions that allow the body to respond and adapt more effectively over time.
Looking Through the Lens of the Brain and Nervous System
My additional training and interests include scalp acupuncture, primitive reflex integration and early childhood development. These experiences have shaped the way I think about health and deepened my appreciation for the relationship between the brain, nervous system and body. The brain and nervous system influence every aspect of our experience — how we move, think, learn, process information, regulate emotions, recover from stress and respond to our environment. When these systems are under strain, the effects can often be felt far beyond a single symptom or diagnosis. This lens has become an important part of how I approach both children's and adult health concerns.
Considering the Experiences That Shape Us
Our health does not exist in isolation from our experiences. Illness, periods of prolonged stress, significant life events, accidents, injuries and concussion can all influence how the brain and nervous system adapt and respond over time. My interest in nervous system function has deepened my appreciation for the ways these experiences may continue to influence sleep, concentration, sensory processing, emotional wellbeing, energy and resilience long after the original event has passed. This does not mean that every symptom can be traced back to a single event or experience. More often, it simply provides another lens through which to understand patterns that may otherwise seem disconnected.
Comfortable With Complexity
Many of the people who come to see me have health stories that do not fit neatly into a single category. Their symptoms may cross multiple systems, change over time or seem unrelated on the surface. My role is often to step back, look at the bigger picture and ask: "What patterns connect these experiences?" Sometimes the answer lies in physiology, sometimes in nervous system regulation, sometimes in development, and often in the interaction between several different systems at once. I am comfortable working with complexity and uncertainty, and I believe that health challenges do not always need to fit neatly into a box in order to deserve thoughtful and individualised care.
Supporting Your Health Journey
My goal is not simply to ask: “How do we make this symptom quieter?" More often I am asking:
What is this system struggling to adapt to?
Where has resilience been lost?
What would help this person recover, regulate and respond more easily to everyday life?
These questions often lead treatment in a very different direction from a purely symptom-based approach.
